A small obscure town turned famous.

Our today’s blog is not related to web development or web designing. It’s about “a small town” that becomes “the town”.

A small town Gander with a population of 10,000 people and hotels with 550 rooms in Newfoundland, Canada became famous while all American airspace was closed after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The town became notable through universally spread words, presenting the hospitality of town’s help to travelers. Gander lies in the northeastern tip of North America. This town served as life saver for trans-Atlantic flights and heaven for flights diverted from their destinations.

The whole story I am going to mention here is written by a member of flight Delta called Nazim.

Mentioned that: They were over the Atlantic. Suddenly the curtains parted violently and she was told to go the cockpit to see the captains right away. The time she reached there, caption handed her printed message. She read the message. The message was sent by Atlanta stated that “ All the airways over the Continental Us are closed and Land as soon as possible to the nearest airport.”

It was definitely a serious situation for them. They quickly decide that the nearest airport was 400 miles away which is Gander, on the island of NewFoundland. They sent quick request to the candian traffic controller and it was approved immediately. They landed in gander within 40 minutes and there were already almost 20 airplanes of the airway from all over the world. None of them was allowed to get off the aircraft. Only Gander police come around to look over and go the next airplane. Meanwhile news started over the radio of aircraft and for first time first time ever they learned that airplanes were flown into the World Trade Center in New York and into the Pentagon in DC.

Due to different cell system in Canada, people weren’t able to use their phones. Some of them did get through but only to the Canadian operator who informed the, that the “lines to the US were blocked or jammed . Try Again”. Passengers were exhausted but stayed calm. As crew kept reminding them that they are not the only ones in this situation.Canadian government is in charge and they are blessed. At 6 PM, Gander airport told them that their turn would come at 11 in the morning. Gander promised them to provide medicine, water and lavatory services if needed and honestly they were true to their word. Said the crew.

OK, let’s take a break from this  today’s blog.I will continue this blog after few weeks.
